Thailand - "the land of a thousand smiles" comprises 76 provinces spread out over an area of 517,000 sqm. Fondly referred to as the Pearl of the South, Phuket, is the only island province in the country, and is 867 km from the capital, Bangkok.
Aside from its crystal watery surroundings and powder white beaches, Phuket is an island blessed with the natural beauty of mountains and valleys spread out across its 530 sq km expanse. The island runs 48 km (34 miles) north to south, and 21 km (16 miles) east to west, making it the largest in the country.
Phuket is the most cosmopolitan town with the highest developed infrastructure in Thailand. Tourism has inadvertently become a main source of living, but much of the country's customs remains rooted in present-day society. Activities are diverse with the island's colourful mix of age-old traditions and inevitable commercial modernisation. Sino-Portuguese and European influences are apparent, particularly in the architecture of Phuket Town.
It is interesting to note that more tourists flock to Phuket than any other island in the country. With a seemingly endless variety of amenities and entertainment options available on the southwestern side of the island, the northern half remains tranquil.
The Chedi is located on Pansea Beach, which is arguably the finest in the region. This peaceful district is only 20 minutes away from the nightlife of Patong, 25 minutes from the airport, and 30 minutes from Phuket Town, by car.
